  • Blender is an open-source program (i.e. free for users) used for modeling, rendering three-dimensional graphic and animations, and interactive 3D applications.

  • Blender is available for several operating systems, including FreeBSD, IRIX, GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Solaris, SkyOS, and MophOS.

  • The famous movie Spider-Man 2 uses Blender to be the main special efficacy tool.

Engineering Graphics - Project 3

Title: From Waffle to Civil: An Fantastic Journey

In this project we divide the whole work into two parts: model sketching and animation processing. At first we thought that we HAVE TO make two buildings by ourselves, so besides the NTU Waffle house we've already made for last project , we also sketched the CERB from AutoCAD to 3D model. Not until last week did we know that we can directly download 3D models from the Internet orz. Anyway I think it is still good for us to draw another one to be more deft to SketchUp skills.

The followings are step-by-step process of our blender work with some photos:
i. We imported the Waffle house but failed because lost too many pieces, so we downloaded a cabin like the Waffle and imported it in as the first building, which the man started to walk from.
ii. Then we drew the second building - CERB from AutoCAD and imported it into blender. Although it lost some details but it was OK so we were glad that it could be used. The CERB build is the second building, which the man's goal.
iii. So one man will walk from Waffle house to CERB, and this is our object purpose as listed on the project 3 sheet.
iv. We downloaded a man from the Internet and use blender to make it "walk" by waving his hands and foot moving. Here we use the "parent" function. In order to make the man move more smoothly, we take the body as the parent and other parts as children. Also we set lap as parent and leg as child and so on. So the man's movements are all connected.
v. Now we got the man, we got the buildings and we are going to make it move. Here we applied the "following path" function. We first make a curve from the door of cabin to the entrance of CERB. Then we use the following path function to connect the man onto the path.
The curve line on the top view of whole area is the "path"
vi. At the beginning the total frame was 800 and the cycle of walking is 250, and we thought the relationship between them is not reasonable. Thus we adjusted the frame proportion so that it looks more like "walking" instead of "sliding" XD Check this out on the movie !
vii. We put two cameras -- one on the man's eye position which moves as the man moves, another one around the man, and it has it own path. The second camera is to simulate the BOSS who is watching the man.
viii. After we finished the major work, we tried to make the whole scene more beautiful. Hence we downloaded some buildings and objects to decorate the whole area.
ix. We changed the color of some buildings appropriately and draw wires between two power towers.
x. RENDER TIME!!!! We rendered the movies 5 times before it is well adjusted. Every time took about 1 to 1.5 hour.
xi. We used Movie Maker to compress the movie and add music. (Note that two movies use different music to represent different kind of view.)
